Chavez-DeRemer Announces Coalition of Support from Local Law Enforcement, Firefighters

HAPPY VALLEY, Oregon – Today, Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer (OR-05) announced a coalition of support from public safety officials, consisting of over 50 firefighters and law enforcement officials across the 5th District. The launch of “Public Safety Officials for Lori” comes after the Oregon Coalition of Police and Sheriffs, which has endorsed the congresswoman and is the state’s largest police association, sent out a scathing rebuke of Janelle Bynum’s misleading claims that she would not play politics with public safety.

“While violent crime has dropped in other parts of the country since 2020, homicides in Portland have risen by 278 percent; our state has experienced the highest rate of fentanyl overdose deaths in the nation; and now we are listed as one of the most dangerous states in the country. Oregonians are fed up with soft-on-crime policies that have failed to keep them safe, and that’s why I’ve fought to hold criminals accountable and let law enforcement do their jobs,” Chavez-DeRemer said. “My record speaks for itself, and I’m honored to have endorsements from groups like ORCOPS, the Oregon State Fire Fighters Council, and now this coalition of honorable men and women who have put themselves in harm’s way to keep our communities safe. I’m grateful to each and every one of them for their support, and together, we will keep pushing forward to make Oregon safer and stronger.”

During her first term, Chavez-DeRemer has worked hard to empower law enforcement and support firefighters. In addition to securing millions in public safety investments for Linn and Marion counties, she helped pass several bills to provide law enforcement with more tools to combat the fentanyl crisis. The congresswoman has also backed bipartisan legislation to help firefighters and their families, including the PFAS Alternatives Act, to improve gear and equipment to protect firefighters from harmful chemicals. She has been endorsed by Local 1159, the Clackamas County affiliate of the International Association of Firefighters (IAFF), and the Oregon State Fire Fighters Council (OSFFC).
